Craving Creativity in the Solitude of Covid-19

As artists we must reach into the Silence

Art has something to do with the achievement of stillness in the midst of chaos. A stillness which characterizes prayer, too, in the eye of the storm… Art has something to do with an arrest of attention in the midst of distraction.
— Saul Bellow

These are times that are like no other. As artists, we are conditioned to working in solitude. This, however, is a different kind of solitude, not of our choosing. So how does it affect our art practice?

Saul Bellow’s comment above aroused in me a deeper questioning of the nature of stillness and solitude. Has art then something to do with prayer? When we pour our souls out onto the canvas, are we digging deeper into our soul, praying in some way? I find myself craving creativity but of a different kind. In order to support your practice:
