At The Art Process Studio, Kathy Leader orchestrates mindful creativity programs for health and wellness. At Godmothers, she'll lead a no-experience-required mixed media session.

Each month we focus on a different technique or concept. This month: abstract summer painting in the courtyard.

You’ll leave with both a sense of wholeness and a meaningful piece of art to remind you of all the different parts that make you who you are.

No experience is required, all skill levels are welcome, and all materials are provided.

This free event at the Community Environmental Center in Santa Barbara is part of their community engagement program, open to all! Come join us for this guided art experience focused on nature. No drawing experience necessary! Please wear clothes that can get messy.

During this contemplative creative experience, you will be guided through the art of observing and drawing objects from nature. Kathy will facilitate a unique drawing experience in which you imagine yourself  as  an insect navigating the lines and curves of the plant material. This process allows for a lively drawing without needing any prior experience. As we work in community, our interconnectedness will reflect the underground network of the earth. Come prepared to get a bit messy (wear old clothes) and have a unique playful creative experience!

Create a mixed media mandala for spring blooming. Using collage, hand printing and paint, we will explore the mindful heart opening qualities of creative mandala making. You will have a personal piece that you will take home with you. All levels welcome and all materials will be provided.Don’t miss this rare opportunity!

The structure would be based on a large sketchbook in which we will record ideas, prompts, techniques, thoughts etc.

We will begin with a guided meditation and each week we will have a different art prompt that I will give using basic materials. We will then have time to share our ideas and thoughts on how this can be integrated into our practice at home.

Creating abstract mixed media collages

Using gel plate prints, collage material and paints, we will explore the various ways to create simplified abstract compositions using the elements of art. This is an all levels class. If you do not have your own collage papers, extras will be provided. The focus is on exploring your own creative voice, with a light fun element!

Explore the wonderful world of gelli-plate printing: mono printing without a press, using free painting, botanicals, stencils and string. Image transfers will be touched on too. Take home many beautiful prints! A materials list will be emailed upon registration.

This one 45 minute live online session is designed carefully to allow you to express yourself in an authentic way. We start the session with a short guided meditation and then you will be given various prompts using different materials. The goal is to move your experience from your head to the paper in a way that feels soothing and enlightening. Mixed media incorporates paint, drawing, printing and collage. A simple materials list will be given out before the class.

Everyone can draw, it’s simply a matter of slowing down, looking closely, and letting your hand follow what your eyes see.

In this beginner-friendly workshop, artist and educator Kathy Leader will guide you through simple techniques that awaken your creativity and build your confidence on the page. With her warm, encouraging approach, you’ll learn to see shapes, lines, and shadows in a new way — and discover that drawing isn’t about perfection, but about presence.

You’ll leave with practical skills, a few sketches of your own, and the reminder that creativity is a practice available to everyone—including you.

This event will be hosted in our third-floor workshop space, which is only accessible by stairs.

This will be a unique workshop with Artist Kathy Leader & Poet Laureate Emeritus David Starkey: Transforming art into words and words into art: A journey into mixed media with poetry and collage for all levels of experience.

Learn to layer using translucent papers and gelli prints to create rich textured surfaces. Bring previous pieces that you want to work over/layer over. OR start from scratch. No prior experience is necessary. Let’s embrace our “mistakes” and transform them into something rich and beautiful!

This workshop is appropriate for all levels. If you are a beginner and do not have any materials, we can provide them for you. Each workshop is designed around a particular concept or technique. This month the focus is on the calming results of drawing on the right side of the brain. If you have a gelli plate, we will learn ways to incorporate the two. We will make gorgeous drawings on and off the gelli plate to use in collage work.

Collage is great for beginner or experienced creatives. All materials will be provided and prompts will be given in order to inspire your process! Mixed media incorporates paint, drawing, printing and collage. It can be overwhelming! In this course, you will create a catalog of techniques for altering papers that you will use to create various types of small compositions. You will be taken step by step through my tried and true process leaving you feeling inspired, confident and ready to jump into larger pieces.

If you are a beginner, looking to explore your creative voice but don’t know where to begin, this is for you! If you have an existing practice, we will support your journey together. Together we will explore various techniques in mixed media and collage as you are encouraged to find your own intuitive creative voice.
