In my fear-less creating mixed media art workshops in The Art Process Studio, I have learnt how to encourage artists at any level to face a blank canvas without completely melting down and tightening up. It is all about layering and avoiding seeing each layer as a final product.
Intuitive collage as a base is always a great start, even if its completely covered up by the next layer/s of paint. That can create a rich surface to work over, while allowing you to "excavate" images/ideas beneath the surface.
